Saturday's women's basketball overtime thriller at No. 4 Stanford was very exciting for the fans who made the trip to the Farm as coach Gottlieb's squad took the Cardinal to overtime in a hard-fought 74-71 defeat.

On the way out to the bus after the game, members of the team wanted to show their appreciation to the many Cal fans and members of the band who made the trip to Stanford to support their Bears. Check out this video of the team breaking it down with the band outside Maples Pavilion and thanking the Cal family for its support.

Men's basketball senior guard Jorge Gutierrez, sophomore guard Allen Crabbe and head coach Mike Montgomery speak to the media following the Golden Bears' 69-59 win against Stanford on Sunday.

CAL-STANFORD QUICK RECAP

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
The Cal seniors have never lost to Stanford on the Haas Pavilion floor and they made sure of that today with a 69-59 victory over the Cardinal in front of a sold-out, raucous arena. The Bears out-scored Stanford, 37-26, in the second half to pull away late en route to the double-digit victory.

Senior Jorge Gutierrez led the charge with 11 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, while sophomore Allen Crabbe chipped in 18 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists.

The Bears pulled ahead late and capped a mini-run with a Robert Thurman emphatic slam dunk with 4:01 to play which gave Cal an 11-point lead.

The Bears led by as many as 13 on a Justin Cobbs free throw with 52 seconds left en route to the win.

Stanford, known for their rebounding prowess, was out-rebounded 41-31 by the Bears tonight thanks in large part to Gutierrez's work on the glass.

More importantly, Cal stayed perfect at home, at 14-0 and remained atop the Pac-12 standings as we head into the second half of the conference season.

Arizona is up next on Thursday as we GOLD OUT HAAS!

Cal-Stanford Quick First-Half Recap

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
For the second day in a row, I have a great seat for an exciting Cal-Stanford showdown. In a game of runs, the Cardinal holds a slim 33-32 lead at the half thanks to a Stefan Nastic's off-balance jumper as time expired in the first half.

Down 11-7 early, Cal went on a 7-0 run, capped by a Jorge Guttierez three-pointer with 12:37 to play in the half to surge out to a 14-7 advantage.

The Bears countered a Stanford run with another 7-0 run of their own to re-capture the lead and push the advantage to nine points at 25-16 with 6:24 remaining in the opening half.

The lead didn't last for long, however, as the Cardinal went on a 9-0 run to tie the game up at 27-27 with just under two minutes remaining in the half.

Cal held the lead for most of the opening 20 minutes, leading by as many as nine at one point, while Stanford led by as many as five early on before re-capturing the lead at the half-time buzzer.

Allen Crabbe leads the Bears with 12 points, while Justin Cobbs has seven points and Gutierrez has poured in five in the half.

Forward Dwight Powell and center Stefan Nastic lead the Cardinal with nine points apiece in the opening half.

The second half is about to start... GO BEARS!!!

The Cal-Stanford series is not only a hotly contested rivalry, but the games usually play a role in deciding the Pac-12 champion each season.

This year is no different as Cal (16-5 overall) sits in a tie for second place in the conference (only because Washington played yesterday and the Bears don't play until today) with a 6-2 record and Stanford (15-5 overall) is close behind with a 5-3 league mark.

The Bears and Cardinal did not face any common opponents on the non-conference portion of their schedules, however both played UCLA, USC, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State, Utah and Colorado in league action. Here are the results of each school's game.

Opponent                                   Cal                      Stanford
UCLA                                         W, 85-69             W, 60-59
USC                                           W, 53-49             W, 51-43
at Oregon                                   W, 77-60              L, 78-67
at Oregon State                           L, 92-85              W, 103-101 (OT)
Colorado                                     W, 57-50             W, 84-64
Utah                                           W, 81-45             W, 68-65
at Washington                            W, 69-66               L, 76-63
at Washington State                    L, 77-75                L, 81-69

Now, let's take a look back at the last couple of years and break down the matchups since Mike Montgomery took over as head coach of the Bears beginning with the 2008-09 season.

Cal owns a 4-2 record against Stanford with Montgomery in charge of the Bears. Cal also holds a commanding 29-game lead in the all-time series and has won 55 of the 98 games played in Berkeley. The closest final score between the two teams in the last three years was a six-point game in the first meeting between the two schools with Montgomery at the helm of the Bears in 2008-09.

Last season, the Bears and Cardinal split a pair of regular season contests with Cal winning in Berkeley (74-55) and Stanford winning holding serve at home (82-68). In the first meeting of the year at Maples Pavilion, Harper Kamp's 16 points weren't enough as Stanford shot 72.2 percent from the field in the second half and were led by Jeremy Green's 21 points and Dwight Powell's 20. It was the first time Cal had allowed more than 80 points in a game last season. In the final game of the 2010-11 regular season, Cal stormed out of the gates and never looked back, cruising to the victory at Haas Pavilion. The Bears converted eight of their initial 14 shots and held Stanford to just 2-of-13 from the field out of the gates to open up a 19-4 early lead. Then freshmen Allen Crabbe scored 21 of his 24 points in the second half and Kamp added 20 in the victory.

Cal swept the season series from Stanford in 2009-10, winning both contests by double digits. The Bears opened conference play with a 92-66 victory at Haas Pavilion and closed the regular-season campaign with a 71-61 victory over at Maples Pavilion. In the first matchup, Jerome Randle led all scorers with 24 points and seven assists, while Max Zhang contributed 13 points, four rebounds and three blocked shots to give Cal its biggest win in the Bay area rivalry in more than 20 years, since an 81-53 win on Feb. 15, 1986. Patrick Christopher scored 23 points in the ladder matchup to not only give the Bears the sweep of the Cardinal but also help Cal secure the outright Pac-10 title with the win in Maples Pavilion. It was the first season sweep of Stanford for the Bears since the 1992-93 season. Landry Fields' 25 points and 12 rebounds weren't enough for the Cardinal, who lost by double figures for the second time to Cal.

Both games were closely-contested in 2008-09, with the largest margin of victory coming by seven points. Cal rebounded from a 75-69 loss at Stanford with an 82-75 victory in Berkeley later in the season.

In the first matchup, Stanford's Lawrence Hill poured in a career-best 25 points, while Jamal Boykin led the 22nd-ranked Bears with a career-best 22 points. For Montgomery, the former Stanford mentor, it was his first appearance at Maples as head coach of the Bears. Theo Robertson, who finished with 17 points, hit back-to-back three-pointers in the final 1:36, but it wasn't enough in a game that featured 15 lead changes and 10 ties.

We saved the best for last. Cal celebrated its 100th season of basketball that featured members of the 1959 NCAA Championship team honored at halftime, with a historic comeback victory over the Cardinal. While Christopher (21) and Randle (18) combined for 39 points to lead the Bears to the seven-point victory at Haas Pavilion, it was a freshman guard that made one of the key shots down the stretch to help secure the victory. The Bears trailed by as much as 22 points in the first half and were down by 14 at halftime. Cal went with a three-guard lineup to open the second half that included then-freshman guard Jorge Gutierrez. The first-year player showed his defensive prowess with five steals (most by a Cal player in more than three years) and recorded 10 points and eight rebounds in the contest. Cal captured its first lead (72-71) with 3:04 to go in the contest. Gutierrez made a key shot with 1:37 remaining to complete the comeback and the Bears held Stanford to just one field goal in the final 8:04 of the game.

That same Gutierrez is now a senior and will suit up for the Bears in today's contest. Considered one of the elite players and top defenders in the nation, the guard expects to play a major role in today's contest. Who knows what today will bring, but I can guarantee you it will be fun for the fans at Haas Pavilion.

Head coach Lindsay Gottlieb, freshman Brittany Boyd and junior Layshia Clarendon talked to the media after Cal's 74-71 defeat to No. 4 Stanford in overtime Saturday, Jan. 28, inside Maples Pavilion.

Cal-Stanford - The Quick Recap

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
Well the fans of both teams at Maples Pavilion sure got their money's-worth today. Cal (15-6, 6-3 Pac-12) played tooth-and-nail with the No. 4 team in the nation in Stanford (18-1, 9-0 Pac-12) before falling, 74-71, in overtime to the Cardinal in an action-packed Pac-12 contest.

Down by as many as 14 points in the second half and nine points (69-60) with 2:27 remaining in regulation, Cal stormed back with a 9-0 run to tie it up at 69-69 and force overtime. Junior Layshia Clarendon led the charge with seven of the nine points during the late-game run, tying it up with a pair of free throws with 27 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Bears then played solid defense to prevent a last-second basket and force the first overtime between the schools since the 1982-83 season. Cal held Stanford without a field goal over the final 2:58 of regulation.

The teams traded baskets over the first two minutes of overtime before Stanford converted three-consecutive free throws to take a 74-71 lead with 23 seconds to play. Clarendon got off two looks from behind the three-point arc, but neither fell as Stanford escaped with the victory.

Boyd led the Bears with a career-high 19 points, with 14 of them coming in the opening half. Clarendon, who surpassed the 1,000 point mark for her career in the contest, finished the game with 17 points.

Stanford's Chiney Ogwumike led the Cardinal with a career-high 27 points and 18 rebounds.

A great game to watch for the fans and luckily for us, they play again on Sunday, March 4 in Berkeley. See you at Haas Pavilion.

First-Half Quick Recap: Cal-Stanford

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
What a first half between Cal and Stanford here at Maples Pavilion. It is a great back-and-forth contest so far. Freshman guard Brittany Boyd poured in 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting to go along with four rebounds and two two assists in the first half.

Cal opened the game with a pair of buckets (set up by a pair of Gennifer Brandon rebounds) to take the early 4-0 advantage before Stanford made a run of its own to pull ahead.

The Bears re-captured the lead as Layshia Clarendon, facing a double-team, kicked the ball out to an open Boyd for a three-pointer to make it 7-6 early on.

The play was part of a frenzied first couple of minutes that featured 17 combined shots between Cal and Stanford in the first four minutes of the contest.

Stanford made another run to surge out to an eight-point lead at one point before the Boyd show took center stage.

The freshman guard took over, scoring three-straight baskets at one point en route to the 14 first-half points, one shy of her career-high in a full game.

Brandon controlled the glass for the Bears with five rebounds in the first half.

Chiney Ogwumike led Stanford with 13 points and nine rebounds in the opening half.

Can't wait for the second-half to get underway.

Head men's basketball coach Mike Montgomery, sophomore guard Allen Crabbe and junior forward Robert Thurman help preview Cal's game with rival Stanford on Sunday at Haas Pavilion.

Cal seniors Marvin Jones and Mitchell Schwartz completed their first day of practice in Mobile, Ala. for Saturday's Senior Bowl at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Jones, a wide receiver, and Schwartz, an offensive lineman, both stood out during workouts on Monday.

SI.com draft expert Tony Pauline said "Overall Marvin Jones made a great impression and delivered much more than scouts expected. Jones has stood out in one-on-one drills. He probably runs the best routes of anyone on the North team, consistently separates from defensive backs and has made several outstanding receptions."

Pauline also talked about Schwartz' workouts, saying "Mitchell Schwartz was forced to play center after the North's second center, Garth Gerhart (ASU) left the field with an injury. Schwartz has held his own in the early going, blocking with good fundamentals and, more importantly, displaying the ability to handle the center/quarterback snap exchange."

You can read Pauline's full analysis of day one at the Senior Bowl here.

The New York Times highlighted Jones in their analysis of the wide receivers after Monday's workouts. You can read the full story here

Fellow Golden Bears -

With nearly 130 years of history, Golden Bear football has a long and proud tradition at the University of California, one that will continue for decades to come. As a community, we root for the Bears with a passion that rivals any school in the country. The same enthusiasm that unites so many of us also motivates us in our daily work within Cal Athletics as we strive to put the best possible teams on the field.

While two assistant coaches - Tosh Lupoi and Eric Kiesau - have recently left the Cal football family, we are wholly committed to completing our staff with talented coaches who personify the values and principles we all share.

Rest assured, we wanted coaches Lupoi and Kiesau to remain on our staff and were aggressive in our efforts to retain both of them. The willingness of our community to support these efforts was crucial. While compensation is important, we cannot ignore our fiscal responsibility. In the context of the University's overall financial situation and the extraordinary efforts from so many of you to help preserve the scope of our 29-sport athletics program, we have an obligation to remain vigilant when it comes to our precious resources.

Coaching changes occur frequently, and change in and of itself is not unusual. Neither Coach Tedford nor I begrudge the coaches for doing what they think is best for themselves and their families. We are disappointed, though, in the timing of their decisions and the manner in which this has unfolded as we approach National Signing Day.

We know from past experience that while those who choose to leave our program are usually missed, they are always replaced with other gifted coaches who jump at the chance to become part of our program. Our new coaches will join an experienced and successful staff already in place.

We are being diligent and expedient in finding the right people who meet our needs and objectives for the long-term health of our program - just as we do in every coaching search. As many of you know, we have already hired Wes Chandler as our new wide receivers coach, a former NFL All-Pro who has more than 25 years experience playing and coaching football at the professional and collegiate levels.

This University stands as one of the world's great institutions of higher learning with a well-deserved reputation for excellence and high achievement in all its endeavors. What helps set us apart at Cal is that the term student-athlete is not an oxymoron - a fact that is not lost on recruits. As always, the quality of our institution, our students, our faculty and our staff remain our biggest draw.

The future of Cal football could not be brighter as we fully anticipate signing another highly-rated recruiting class on the heels of our past two classes that have ranked among the top 15 in the country. Memorial Stadium construction is ahead of schedule thanks to the dry winter, and the new Simpson Center for Student-Athlete High Performance has proven to be a game-changer for us; recruits themselves have talked about the impact it has made on them and their decision to come to Cal.

We - the team, the coaches, the staff - are all looking forward to seeing everyone back on campus and in Berkeley in a newly renovated Memorial Stadium in 2012!

GO BEARS!

Senior forward Harper Kamp is one of the Golden Bears' top players on the men's basketball team this season with 9.1 ppg. average. However, it is his dog Franklin that is certainly the fan favorite.

Check out this story that aired Friday night on KPIX featuring Franklin.

I know the season is young, but former Cal men's basketball standout Ryan Anderson is having an All-Star season with the Orlando Magic. He ranks 15th in the NBA in scoring, averaging 19.7 points per game to go along with 7.4 rebounds per contest.

Anderson has many talents outside the court as well. You can see him mastering the art of grape catching here or check out this video below of him teaching the game of "Snoogle" to everyone.

You can support the former Golden Bear and Sacramento native when the Magic come to town next week to play the Kings and the Warriors.
