Down 11-7 early, Cal went on a 7-0 run, capped by a Jorge Guttierez three-pointer with 12:37 to play in the half to surge out to a 14-7 advantage.
The Bears countered a Stanford run with another 7-0 run of their own to re-capture the lead and push the advantage to nine points at 25-16 with 6:24 remaining in the opening half.
The lead didn't last for long, however, as the Cardinal went on a 9-0 run to tie the game up at 27-27 with just under two minutes remaining in the half.
Cal held the lead for most of the opening 20 minutes, leading by as many as nine at one point, while Stanford led by as many as five early on before re-capturing the lead at the half-time buzzer.
Allen Crabbe leads the Bears with 12 points, while Justin Cobbs has seven points and Gutierrez has poured in five in the half.
Forward Dwight Powell and center Stefan Nastic lead the Cardinal with nine points apiece in the opening half.
