In a matchup of the nation's leading scorer, Damian Lillard, and the nation's best defender, Jorge Gutierrez (maybe I am a little biased), it was the California Golden Bear who got the upper hand in the first half. Cal leads Weber State, 32-18, in the opening half here at Haas Pavilion.

Lillard, who entered tonight's contest leading the country with a 26.9 ppg. average, was held in check by Gutierrez with just four points on 1-of-10 shooting from the field, including 0-of-5 from three-point range in the half. Meanwhile, Gutierrez led all scorers with eight points to go along with four rebounds in the half.

The Bears scored the open bucket of the game and never looked back en route to the 14-point halftime advantage. Cal pulled away from Weber State with a 10-0 run from 6:06 to 1:34 in the opening period.

Sophomore Allen Crabbe and freshman David Kravish each have six points for the Golden Bears in the half.

Cal's defense is holding the Wildcats to 17.1 percent (6-of-35) shooting overall from the field and 2-of-14 from three-point range.

Second half is eight minutes away... more in a little bit.
