Men's Water Polo
LOS ALAMITOS, CALIF. - The No. 3 Cal men's water polo team outscored No. 6 Pacific, 5-1, in the fourth period to pull out an 11-9 victory over the Tigers in the second round of the SoCal Invitational at the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base.
Volleyball
BERKELEY - The No. 4 California volleyball team earned itself a 3-1 victory over Arizona State at Haas Pavilion, where the Golden Bears remain undefeated. Christina Higgins and Tarah Murrey both put up 16 kills to lead Cal to victory - 25-19, 25-23, 18-25 and 25-15.
With its second conference victory in as many days, the Bears improve to 15-2 overall and 5-2 in the Pac-12 while the Sun Devils are still winless in conference play at 0-6 and fall to 4-11 overall.
Women's Tennis
BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team forged ahead and claimed all four spots in the singles semifinal of the 2011 Cal Nike Invitational at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears had five players in the quarterfinal round to produce one all-Cal match-up, but one guaranteed spot wasn't enough as the Bears came out on top in all four quarterfinals to produce an all-Cal semifinal.
No. 1-ranked and top-seeded senior Jana Juricova claimed a 6-4, 6-0 win over Arizona State's seventh-seeded Hannah James, and was followed by her teammates as each player earned straight-set wins. Second-seeded No. 41-ranked junior Tayler Davis dismissed Clarisse Baca of Sacramento State, 6-4, 6-3, while fifth-seeded No. 88-ranked sophomore Anett Schutting upended the fourth seed--No. 77-ranked Jenny Jullien of Saint Mary's College--6-1, 6-3. In the Cal vs. Cal quarterfinal, freshman Sofie Susanyi stood fast to claim a 7-5, 6-3 win against third-seeded No. 57-ranked junior Annie Goransson.
Davis will match up against Susanyi and Juricova will take on Schutting in 10:30 a.m. PT semifinal matches on Sun., Oct. 2. The singles championship match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Men's Tennis
FRESNO, Calif. - Members of the California men's tennis team concluded play in the 2011 Fresno State Bulldog Classic at the Wathen Tennis Center. The Golden Bears had advanced to singles quarterfinals and doubles semifinals.
Up against host school Fresno State's second-seeded Francis Alcantara in the Flight A singles quarterfinals, freshman Chase Melton fell, 7-5, 6-2.
Senior Tommie Murphy was defeated by San Francisco's Jacob Hartwig, 6-3, 6-1, in Flight A's singles consolation quarterfinal round.
In doubles play, Murphy and freshman Andrew Pises fell short of making a finals appearance as the second-seeded team of Robin Cambier and Jeff Mullen of Oregon came up with an 8-3 victory in the semifinals.
