The women's gymnasts were out in force on another SAAC sponsored community service project. Earlier this month (on Sept. 12th), a good majority of the team were in Golden Gate Park helping to raise money for lung cancer research at Jog for Jill. This time, the girls rolled up their sleeves and helped to clean up the shoreline. Here are some pics from their Sept. 25th cleanup efforts.

An impressive second round during a 36-hole day of golf Sunday at the Windon Memorial Classic has Cal in second place heading into the final 18 holes of the event scheduled for Monday. Cal will start Monday's final round at the 7,067-yard par 71 North Shore Country Club two shots behind Michigan, who is at four-over par after firing a four-over par 36-hole total of 572 (285-287). The first tee time Monday is 8:30 a.m. CT/6:30 a.m. PT.

The Cal men's golf team is tied for 10th place through the first 18 holes of action Sunday at the Windon Memorial Classic. The event is being hosted by Northwestern at the 7,067-yard par-71 North Shore Country Club in Glenview, Illinois. Cal shot a 17-over par 301 that has the Bears 16 shots behind the one-over par 285 team score posted by first-round leader Michigan.

Ben An had the best Cal score in the first round, firing a two-over par 73 that is tied for 21st but only four shots behind the two-under par rounds of 69 posted by co-first round leaders David Erdy (Indiana) and Lion Kim (Michigan).

Others playing for Golden Bears include Eric Mina (74, +3, T32nd), James Coré (77, +6, T51st), Max Homa (77, +6, T51st) and Michael Weaver (80, +9, T80th).

The first 36 holes of the 54-event are being played Sunday with the day's second round of action now underway. Return to CalBears.com later in the day Sunday for a recap and complete results.

Here are a few early game notes while the Bears battle the Wildcats in Tucson ...

*Mychal Kendricks recovered the fourth fumble of his career on the final play of the first quarter, setting up Giorgio Tavecchio's 25-yard field goal and giving the Bears 48 points off opponent turnovers this season.

*Cal led, 6-0, at the half, the third time this season the Bears have shut out an opponent in the first half. The last time Cal shut out a Pac-10 foe in the first half was during a 48-7 win over Washington on Dec. 6, 2008.

*Chris Conte's interception in the end zone was the second INT of his career.

*TB Shane Vereen passed the 2,000-yard level in rushing for his career.

*WR Marvin Jones also moved over 1,000 yards receivving for his career.

*TE Spencer Ladner had his first career catch.

California men's basketball head coach Mike Montgomery announced Friday that junior center Max Zhang is not enrolled in school for the fall semester. Zhang played for the Chinese National team earlier this summer in the FIBA World Championships, and he will compete with Team China in the Asian Games in November, which he believes will be his best opportunity to further his progress to make the Chinese Olympic team. The Golden Bears are hoping Zhang will return to the team in the Spring.

"This was something Max couldn't afford to pass up, and we understand that," Montgomery said. "This has always been a lifelong dream of his, and we're wishing him the best of luck."

A native of Yantai City, China, Zhang averaged 3.1 points per game, 2.4 rebounds per game and boasted 37 blocks last season.

Cal football, off to a 2-1 start, remains on the road this week when the Bears visit Arizona Saturday at 7 p.m. PT. Last season, Cal upended the then-18th-ranked Wildcats, 24-16, behind 159 yards on the ground from Shane Vereen.

Augustus and her squad host the Nike Invitational Friday-Sunday. Junior Jana Juricova is the No. 1-ranked singles player in the country and she teams with senior Mari Andersson to form the No. 1 doubles tandem.

McGuire's 18th-ranked Cal team is 5-0-3 on the year and hosts Portland at 3 p.m. Thursday in a pivotal non-conference match at Edwards Stadium.

 

Cal junior tailback Shane Vereen is now leading the Pac-10 in rushing and scoring, while junior wide receiver Marvin Jones paces the conference in receptions after both players posted the most productive games of their collegiate careers at Nevada last Friday.

Vereen ran for a career-high 198 rushing yards and a career-high-tying three touchdowns on 19 carries at Nevada. He now has rushed for 324 yards and six touchdowns on 49 carries in his first three games for a Pac-10-leading average of 108.0 yards per game that is also No. 20 nationally. Cal has had the Pac-10's rushing leader in three of the past six years, with J.J. Arrington (2004, 168.2 ypg), Marshawn Lynch (2006, 104.3 ypg) and Jahvid Best (2008, 131.7 ypg) taking the conference's rushing crowns. Vereen has also scored 48 points on eight touchdowns (six rushing, two receiving) for an average of 16.0 points per game that paces the league and is tied for second nationally. He is also fourth in the Pac-10 in all-purpose yardage (126.33 ypg).

Jones put up career bests with 12 receptions for 161 yards at Nevada and now leads the Pac-10 with 21 catches (7.0 per game), while ranking second with 328 receiving yards (109.33 per game). The last time a Cal player led the Pac-10 in receiving was in 2003 when Geoff MacArthur caught 85 passes for 1,504 yards in 13 contests for an average of 115.4 receiving yards per game. He is also fifth in the conference in all-purpose yardage (117.00 ypg). He is 12th in the nation in receiving yards per game and 15th in receptions per contest.

Shane Vereen just hit a career high with 198 yards on 19 carries with 10:41 still left in the game. Vereen's previous high was 193 yards in the Big Game last year at Stanford.

The 2010 preseason All-America selection equaled a career-high 14 tackles in a 52-7 win over Colorado last Saturday and was subsequently named the to be named the Lott IMPACT Player of the Week, as well as the Muscle Milke California Student Athlete of the Week.

The Cal Ladies zoomed up the standings in the second round. After starting their second round of 18 for the day in ninth place, the gals dropped nine strokes off the team score in the second round, coming in at four-under for their second 18 of the day.

Kevin Riley has just thrown his fourth TD of the game, the first time he has had four TD's in a game since the season opener last year against Maryland.

With the touchdown, Riley moves past Aaron Rodgers on the career TD list. Riley ranks sixth with 44 career TD's. Rodgers had 43.

The one-yard toss to Isi Sofele was the first receiving touchdown for the sophomore tailback. He had a rushing touchdown last season.

Redshirt freshman DB Steve Williams just pulled in his first career interception. Williams hauled in a long pass attempt from Colorado QB Tyler Hansen at the Bears 18. Hansen and the Buffs had been back at their own 30 when he attempted the longball taken away by Williams.

It was the third interception of the game for the Cal defense. It was the first time Cal has had three interceptions in a game since playing at Minnesota last season.

Kevin Riley opened a Cal fourth-quarter drive with a 62-yard strike to Marvin Jones. The 62-yard reception is a career long for Jones. It is two yards shy of Riley's longest pass completion.

Two plays later, Cal was in the end zone with an eight yard pass from Riley to freshman Keenan Allen.

Cal goes up 38-7 with 12:00 left in the game.

The Bears ended the second quarter the same way it began, with an interception. Mike Mohamed had the pick and the 41-yard run back for the score. It was Mohamed's second career interception TD of his career.

Cal goes into the half with a 31-0 lead. The Bears now have kept their opponents off the board in five of the six quarters they have played this season. 

The Buffs did not make it into Cal territory in the first half, playing every down on their own side of the 50.

The Bears racked up three sacks in the period. Mychael Kendricks had one.  Jarred Price had two.

The Bears first play of the second quarter was an interception by Bryan Nnabuife, his first career interception.

The Buffaloes had -8 yards of total offense in the first quarter (-19 rushing, 11 passing).

Riley connected with Marvin Jones for a four-yard TD.

It was the 42nd career touchdown for Riley, putting him one shy of Aaron Rodgers for sixth place on the career passing TD list.

Jones has a streak of 15 straight games with a reception.

After Colorado went three and out, Ross just busted out a 23-yard return, giving Cal a first and ten at the Buff's 19. Riley completes a pass in the end zone to Shane Vereen, a 13-yard completion. Bears take an early 7-0 lead with 7:22 left in the first quarter.

Shane Vereen has now caught a pass in every game of his career (27 games). This was also his fifth receiving touchdown.

Just had a flyover by a C-5 as part of the Spirit of America Day. Thanks to Travis Air Force Base for making that happen, especially Major Jayson Huntman who commanded the plane, ground liaison pilot Captain John Schwartz, Colonel Michael Keenan, and General Norton Schwartz.

It's the annual Cal Band Alumni Day. Early arriving fans to Memorial Stadium were treated to a performance by the band alums. They haven't missed a beat (or a step). Welcome back to California Memorial Stadium!

KGO radio pregame show broadcasts live from Maxwell Field beginning an hour before kickoff. Today's guest is former Cal QB Dave Barr.

The last time Cal and Colorado faced each other was on Sept. 11, 1982 in Boulder when the Bears came away with a 31-17 victory. Other recent games on 9/11 for Cal include a 45-25 victory over a Marshall Faulk-led San Diego State team in 1993 and a 41-14 win over New Mexico State in 2004.

Today's Cal Kickoff game program with Chris Guarnero on the cover includes a feature on the Golden Bear center who says he thrives on competition in the trenches. Other features are on the women's soccer team, an interview with head coach Jeff Tedford, who passed Pappy Waldorf on Cal's all-time wins list last week, and Cal's annual National Championship Week.

All of Cal's 2009-10 national champions will be introduced on the field at halftime today. Last year, the Bears won a team title in rugby, captured the varsity 8 crown in men's rowing, and won a combined 8 championships in swimming - 3 individual men's titles, 1 individual women's title and 4 men's relays. Golden Bears have won at least one national championship each of the last 37 years.

Today marks the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, and Cal is recognizing the occasion with Spirit of America Day. A large U.S. flag will be unfurled on the field during the National Anthem, which will be followed by a flyover by a U.S. Air Force C-5 aircraft.

As we remember all those who died on 9/11, we also pause to recall former Golden Bear tight end Brent Woodall, who was working as a stock trader on the 89th floor of the South Tower at the World Trade Center when the building was hit. As a player, Woodall lettered from 1988-91 and was a key member of the 1991 squad that finished 10-2 with a Citrus Bowl victory over Clemson. He completed his Cal career with 55 receptions for 646 yards and 4 TDs.

A scholarship fund was established in Woodall's memory, and current TE Anthony Miller was the recipient in 2009-10. Good morning from Memorial Stadium as we post our first blog entry before this afternoon's Cal-Colorado match-up. On a perfectly clear day with the sun just rising over the East Bay hills, the Cal alumni and marching bands are reviewing their routines and forming the script California on the field.

To help get you ready for the 12:30 tilt between future conference opponents, here is a little morning reading about the Bears and Buffaloes.

In the SF Chronicle, John Crumpacker writes about the options that WR Keenan Allen gives offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig.

Jonathan Okanes' story in the Contra Costa Times focuses on the stiffer test the Bears will get this week against a Big 12 foe.

And in the Denver Post, a feature on offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau, who served as Cal's wide receivers coach under Jeff Tedford from 2002-05.

The Golden Bears are preparing for their first home game of the season, vs. Saint Mary's at 4 p.m. on Friday on Goldman Field at Edwards Stadium. The game is part of the 14th annual Cal Legacy Classic, which includes Cal's Sunday game vs. UNLV at 2 p.m. in Berkeley. Admission is free to all Cal men's soccer regular-season home games.

Each home Saturday, the Cal pregame show on the Cal/ISP Sports Radio Network (locally on KGO AM 810) broadcasts live from Maxwell Family Field starting one-hour before kickoff. This week's program prior to the 12:30 p.m. Cal-Colorado game will include a live interview with former Golden Bear quarterback Dave Barr, who directed the Cal offense from 1992-94, as well as a taped feature on current wide receiver Marvin Jones.

Todd McKim and Troy Taylor host the first 30 minutes from Maxwell Field, before tossing the program up to Joe Starkey in the broadcast booth.

Former Golden Bear star Magdalena Lewy Boulet captured the women's title at the USA 20-kilometer Championships Monday in New Haven, Conn., cruising home in a time of 1:07.41 for a 45-second win over Stephanie Rothstein.

 

Boulet took charge of the lead pack early. After seven miles, she steadily pulled away from the field, capturing her first U.S. title of 2010.

Cal led 35-0 at the half, the first time the Bears have shut out an opponent in the first half since they led Arizona, 14-0, on Oct. 1, 2005. Cal eventually won, 28-0.

The Bears' 35-point lead was their largest at halftime since holding a 42-3 advantage at Washington State in 2008.

Shane Veeren's two touchdowns in the first half give him 16 rushing TDs in his career, tying him for ninth on Cal's all-time list with Joe Igber and John Tuggle.

 

Kevin Riley completed his first nine passes and threw two touchdowns to give him 39 in his career, one behind Mike Pawlawski, who had 40 during his career.

 

Marvin Jones caught a career-long 51-yard pass from Riley.

 

Mike Mohamed registered six tackles and one pass breakup in the first half.

 

Cal is outgaining UC Davis, 332-31 yards, over the first 30 minutes of the game.

Cal has scored two quick touchdowns in the second quarter and now leads 21-0. Kevin Riley hit Marvin Jones on a 13-yard pass to make it 14-0 with 14:26 to go in the second period.

Cal punt returner Jeremy Ross then returned a punt 37 yards to set up a two-play, 22-yard scoring drive with Keenan Allen scoring his first career touchdown on an 18-yard rush.

Kevin Riley connected on a 23-yard pass to a wide open Shane Vereen for a touchdown for Cal's first points of the season and a 7-0 lead at the 4:11 mark of the first quarter. The Bears covered 80 yards in seven plays, which included a 17-yard run by Isi Sofele and a 17-yard pass to freshman Keenan Allen.

The TD was Riley's 38-th career scoring pass - most among active Pac-10 quarterbacks. Riley has started the game 5-for-5 for 64 yards.

It's 1:07 and the 2010 season is underway. Tavecchio's kickoff reaches the goal line and UC Davis will set up on its own 23. A gorgeious day for football in Berkeley - clear skies and 67 degrees.

It's not even 8 o'clock yet and kick off is more than 5 hours away, but the first fans have set up shop on Tightwad Hill overlooking Memorial Stadium. From here in the press box, it appears they've already unfolded their chairs and spread out a blanket to settle in for the day.

Meanwhile, the band is coming through the tunnel during for a dress rehearsal for its pregame show. The drum major came running right behind and jumped over the band member at the lead position. No toss of the baton, though. That will have to wait for the game.

No,,we aren't seeing a re-enactment of the The Play from 1982. It's 7:30 a.m. and the Cal Marching Band has begun practicing its routine for this afternoon's season opener. All the instruments are on the sidelines as the band members review their steps to the cadence of a a lone drummer.

Good morning from Memorial Stadium! It's about 6:25 and the stadium is starting to wake up. The TV crew from CSN California has just reported to start setting its cameras, pulling cable and setting up the broadcast booth. About the only light is coming off the scoreboards and the press box.

Fog still hovers over the top of the stadium, but it's supposed to clear by game time with a comfortable 69 degrees expected by the 1 p.m. kickoff.

Check back throughout the day for other updates as Cal and UC Davis begin the 2010 football season this afternoon.

 

California junior center Max Zhang scored four points in 21 minutes of work for Team China Thursday at the 2010 FIBA World Championships in Turkey. Zhang's efforts were not enough to help China gain the victory, as Turkey won, 87-40. China fell to 1-4 with one game remaining against Lithuania on Tuesday, Sept. 7.

Zhang shot 2-for-4 from the field, collected two rebounds, three blocked shots, a steal and an assist. This was Zhang's first performance of the tournament.
