Former Cal track & field star Alysia Johnson completed the month of July ranked No. 1 in the world in the women's 800 meters. She posted her world-leading time of 1:57.34 during a victory at a meet in Monaco July 22.
So far this summer, Johnson has run three of the top 12 800 times in the world. Her 1:57.85 during a meet in Lignano, Italy, rates fifth fastest, while her 1:58.94 run in Eugene, Ore., is No. 12 on the list.
Earlier in the year, Johnson finished third at the World Indoor Championships in March. She captured the 2007 NCAA title for the Bears as a junior and is a two-time USA champion in the 800 (2007, 2010).
