The Format NCAA sand volleyball competition consists of five doubles matches, with the school that wins at least three matches getting the overall victory. Matches are a best-of-three format, with the first two sets played to 21 points and a potential decisive third set played to 15. The teams switch sides after every seven points; every five points in the third set.
A Look At The Bears The Bears’ lineup features an All-American and two other players that garnered All-Pac-12 honors during the 2013 indoor season. Senior Joan Caloiaro was an AVCA All-American honorable mention while senior Adrienne Gehan was named to the All-Pac-12 honors. Maddy Kerr was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team. Freshman Emily Lunt and Caroline Olson are the only players on the roster that don’t play for the Bears’ indoor squad.
Last Time The Bears split a pair of matches last Saturday at the Clark Kerr Sand Courts, falling to Sac State 3-2 then coming back to edge Cal Poly, 3-2. Cal’s No. 3 team of Nikki Gombar and Maddy Kerr continued their surge with wins in both matches, and the pair has now won four of its past five, with its only loss coming to No. 9 Saint Mary’s. The Bears’ senior duo of Adrienne Gehan and Joan Caloiaro also took two matches Saturday, one at the No. 1 spot and one at the No. 2 spot. Sophomores Sarah Cole and Lara Vukasovic shared the 1 and 2 spots with Gehan/Caloiaro and split a pair of matches, winning against Cal Poly and dropping a tough three-set match against Sac State. Also Saturday, freshman Katie Curci made her college debut, teaming up with Emily Lunt in a loss against Sac State.
