BERKELEY – The Clark Kerr Sand Courts will bustling with activity Saturday when the Cal sand volleyball team hosts a tri-meet against Sacramento State and Cal Poly. The Bears kick things off at 10 a.m. against the Hornets, followed by the Hornets and Mustangs at 1 p.m. Cal will be back on the courts for the last match of the day against Cal Poly at 4 p.m.
The Format NCAA sand volleyball competition consists of five doubles matches, with the school that wins at least three matches getting the overall victory. Matches are a best-of-three format, with the first two sets played to 21 points and a potential decisive third set played to 15. The teams switch sides after every seven points; every five points in the third set.
A Look At The Bears The Bears’ lineup features an All-American and two other players that garnered All-Pac-12 honors during the 2013 indoor season. Senior Joan Caloiaro was an AVCA All-American honorable mention while senior Adrienne Gehan was named to the All-Pac-12 honors. Maddy Kerr was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team. Freshman Emily Lunt and Caroline Olson are the only players on the roster that don’t play for the Bears’ indoor squad.
Last Time The Bears lost two of three last weekend, falling to Stanford and No. 9 Saint Mary’s while knocking off Sacramento State. During its 4-1 loss to the Cardinal on Friday, Cal’s No. 3 team of Maddy Kerr and Nikki Gombar defeated Stanford’s Madi Bugg and Kelsey Humphreys, 22-20, 21-15. It also marked the first time this season the No. 2 team of sophomores Lara Vukasovic and Sarah Cole dropped a match, falling to Lauren Birks and Jordan Burgess, 21-19, 10-21, 15-12. The next day at the Sac State Invitational, the Bears got wins from Gombar/Kerr, Adrienne Gehan/Joan Caloiaro and Emily Lunt/Caroline Olson to beat the Hornets, 3-2. Cal then fell to Saint Mary’s 5-0, with two of the matches going to three sets.
Next Time The Bears will be back at the Clark Kerr Sand Courts on Friday, April 18 against Santa Clara for their final home match of the season. The first serve is set for 4 p.m. Cal will then be back in Sacramento the following day to play the Hornets once again as well as San Jose State.
