BERKELEY – After getting the program off and running last weekend, the Cal sand volleyball team will host its first home match in history Friday when it welcomes San Jose State to Berkeley for a 4 p.m. matchup. The Bears played their first match ever last Sunday, falling to Pacific, 4-1 in Stockton.
Clark Kerr Sand Courts
The Clark Kerr Sand Courts are located on Sport Lane, behind Clark Kerr Building 6 and below Golden Bear Field. Parking is limited and can be found in three small lots nearby as well as on the street. All parking in the area is metered. There are no bleachers at the facility but a small number of folding chair will be provided. Fans are encouraged to bring their own lawn or folding chairs as well.
NCAA sand volleyball competition consists of five doubles matches, with the school that wins at least three matches getting the overall victory. Matches are a best-of-three format, with the first two sets played to 21 points and a potential decisive third set played to 15. The teams switch sides after every seven points; five points in the third set.

Most of Cal’s roster is made up of student-athletes from its fall indoor team, which advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season. Senior Joan Caloiaro was an AVCA All-American honorable mention in 2013 while senior Adrienne Gehan earned All-Pac-12 honors. Maddy Kerr was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team. Freshman Emily Lunt and Caroline Olson are the only players on the roster that don’t play for the Bears’ indoor squad.
Last Time Out
The sand volleyball program saw its first action ever, opening the 2014 season with a 4-1 loss at Pacific. Cal’s No. 2 team of sophomores Lara Vukasovic and Sarah Cole notched the Bears’ lone win, defeating UOP’s Kimmy Whitson and Anne-Sophie Bauer, 21-16, 21-18. Cal’s No. 1 and No. 3 team each took a set before falling in three.
The Bears will play their second consecutive match at home when they welcome USF to the Clark Kerr Sand Courts at 3:30 p.m.
About San Jose State
The Spartans are also playing their first season of sand volleyball, and they also visited Pacific last weekend. San Jose St. dropped a pair of matches by a 5-0 count, one to the Tigers and another to Santa Clara.
