BERKELEY – A new era in Cal Athletics begins Sunday when the Cal sand volleyball team plays the first match in school history. The Bears, featuring a roster comprised mostly of their indoor team, will travel to visit the University of Pacific on Sunday at 10 a.m.
The Format NCAA sand volleyball competition consists of five doubles matches, with the school that wins at least three matches getting the overall victory. Matches are a best-of-three format, with the first two sets played to 21 points and a potential decisive third set played to 15. The teams switch sides after every seven points; five points in the third set.
Next Time The Bears will host their first-ever match Friday, March 14 when they welcome the San Jose State Spartans to Berkeley. The competition at the Clark Kerr Sand Courts begins at 4 p.m.
Bear Bits Most of Cal’s roster is made up of student-athletes from its fall indoor team, which advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season. Senior Joan Caloiaro was an AVCA All-American honorable mention in 2013 while senior Adrienne Gehan earned All-Pac-12 honors. Maddy Kerr was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team. Freshman Emily Lunt and Caroline Olson are the only players on the roster that don’t play for the Bears’ indoor squad.
About Pacific The Tigers played their first season of sand volleyball last year and went 5-4 in their inaugural season. That included an upset of No. 9 Saint Mary’s in their regular season finale. UOP sent one of its pairs to the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships, as freshman Kat Schulz and senior Hannah Clancy were one of 10 individual pairs that played in the tournament. Before playing Cal on Sunday, the Tigers will open the 2014 season Saturday with matches against San Jose St. and Santa Clara.
Cal’s Indoor Team To Take European Tour The Bears indoor team is taking an international trip to Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia and Switzerland next spring. The trip will be from May 24-June 7 and and Cal will play matches against various club and nationally sponsored teams from the different countries it visits, while getting a cultural education in the process. Under NCAA rules, teams are permitted to take a foreign tour once every four years. The tour will be paid for exclusively through fundraising efforts.
