Note: Starting today, CalBears.com is launching a regular feature that recaps the bi-weekly Golden Bear Advisory Committee meeting on campus. GBAC is a council made up of approximately 10 percent of Cal’s student-athlete population who represent their teams in decision-making about events and activities, providing feedback to administration and input on NCAA rules and regulations.
Another great GBAC meeting tonight. It’s great to check in with all the other teams we don’t always see around campus. It was a smaller turnout tonight, but that meant more food for the rest of us.
The meeting was a quickie. Each committee briefly checked in and caught up on projects: poster-making, program updates, etc. The Blue & Gold Committee talked about the upcoming Locker-to-Boardroom Athlete Fashion Show, and is now taking sign-ups for models and emcees. The show features student-athletes demonstrating dressing in campus casual, business casual and then finally business professional. Everybody brings gently used clothing to donate to local community organizations.
The Philanthropy Committee announced that they need shifts for the St. Mark’s Hot Meals Volunteer Day this Saturday. After the committee announcements, we heard from our guest speaker, Officer Nabozny from the UCPD. We had a good discussion about current events on campus, specifically the rise in alcohol-related emergencies, sexual assaults, and armed robberies. Officer Nabozny gave us some great advice on how to step-in when we encounter these things on campus.
To wrap up, we discussed the success of College Sports Day, which was held last Saturday at Memorial Stadium. It featured student-athletes from 16 teams coaching kids ages K-6. Lastly, we gave a shout-out to men’s soccer & women’s swimming, who had successful matches last week, and women’s basketball, which is holding their Bear Day game against Duke on November 10th!
