Tarrago Helps Spain Capture Bronze Medal

Hungary, led by Cal's Antal and Illes, win Fifth Place Game

KHANTY-MANSIYSK, Russia – Cal sophomore Roser Tarrago came home with her fifth medal in her past five international tournaments when Spain defeated China 7-5 in the Bronze Medal Game of the FINA Women’s Water Polo World Cup on Sunday.

Tarrago, an All-American Honorable Mention as a freshman at Cal last spring, won the Silver Medal with Spain at the 2012 Summer Olympics then won the Gold Medal at the FINA World Championships last summer. She also helped Spain take the Gold Medal at the European Championships last month.

Spain also won a Silver Medal at last summer’s World Junior Championships.

Tarrago scored the game-winning goal Sunday, finding the net in the fourth period to help Spain snap a 5-5 tie. Tarrago finished with 18 goals during the tournament and was named to the FINA World Cup All-Star Team.

Meanwhile, Cal teammates Dora Antal and Anna Illes, also sophomores, helped Hungary get by Russia 14-11 in the Fifth Place Game. Antal, the 2014 MPSF Newcomer of the Year and First Team All-American, scored a goal to finish with 11 during the tournament. Illes was an All-MPSF Honorable Mention as a freshman. Hungary won the Bronze Medal at the European Championships last month.
