Student-Athletes Compete At European Championships

BUDAPEST, Hungary - Three Cal women’s water polo players opened group play in the 2014 European Championships on Wednesday in Budapest, Hungary.

Sophomores Dora Antal and Anna Illes play for Hungary while sophomore Roser Tarrago competes for Spain.

Tarrago, who won a Silver Medal with Spain at the 2012 London Olympics, scored three goals Wednesday but the Spaniards were edged by Russia, 10-9. Two of her goals came in the second half, with each one tying the game. Her final shot with three seconds left hit the bar and the Russians held on.

Antal scored a goal in the second period for Hungary. She had a shot saved by The Netherlands’ goalie with six seconds remaining and Hungary trailing 12-10. The Hungarians scored a final goal with one second left .

Antal was a First Team All-American and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Newcomer of the Year in 2014 while Tarrago and Illes earned All-American Honorable Mention.

Group play continues Friday with Hungary playing Greece and Spain taking on France.
