KUNSHAN, China – Two Cal student-athletes went head to head Tuesday on the opening day of the FINA Women’s Water Polo World League Super Final in Kunshan, China.

Sophomore Roser Tarrago plays for Spain while incoming freshman Emma Wright is on Team Canada. The Spaniards edged the Canadians 6-5 on Tuesday.

Tarrago, who won a Silver Medal for Spain at the 2012 Summer Olympics, was named to the 2014 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Newcomer Team after finishing second on the Bears with 49 goals. Her 2.04 goals-per-game average ranked fifth in the conference.

Wright was Canada’s second-leading scorer at last summer’s FINA World Championships and also represented her country at the World Junior Championships in 2011 and 2013. Wright will join Cal’s program as soon as her obligations with the Canadian National Team program are over.

The Bears had one of the best seasons in school history in 2014, ascending to No. 3 in the national rankings and advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.

Spain will take on Russia on Wednesday while Canada meets the United States.
