BERKELEY – Emma Wright, a member of the Canadian National Team, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Cal.
The youngest player on Team Canada, Wright was her country’s second-leading scorer at last summer’s FINA World Championsips in Barcelona, Spain. Wright also represented Canada at the World Junior Championships at age 14 in 2011 in Trieste, Italy and again last summer in Volos, Greece.
“Despite being so young, Emma Wright has a great wealth of international experience,” Cal coach Richard Corso said. “The potential that she has academically and athletically is significant. She will not only be a great teammate at Berkeley, but more important a superior student-athlete. We look forward to integrating her into our offensive and defensive schemes.”
Wright will join the Bears as soon as her obligations with the Canadian National Team program are over.
Wright, from Lindsay, Ontario, is a 6-0 left-handed attacker. She joins Italian National Team member Carla Carrega, Canadian Junior National Team member Kindred Paul and U.S. Youth National team standout Kacey Avalos to make up Cal’s 2014 recruiting class.
The Bears are preparing for the 2014 NCAA Tournament, which begins Friday, May 9 at USC’s Uytengsu Aquatics Center. Cal, the No. 4 seed, takes on fifth-seeded Arizona State in a quarterfinal match.
