BERKELEY – Cal freshman Dora Antal was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Newcomer of the Year on Tuesday.
Antal was also named to the All-MPSF First Team. Senior Ashley Young earned All-MPSF Second Team honors while freshman Anna Illes and junior Kelly McKee were All-MPSF Honorable mention. Antal, Illes and freshman Roser Tarrago were all named to the MPSF All-Newcomer Team.
Antal was the only freshman named to the All-MPSF First Team.
Antal is the first Cal player ever to be named the MPSF Newcomer of the Year. She enters next week’s NCAA Tournament as the conference’s leading scorer at 2.96 goals per game. She was named the MPSF Newcomer of the Week three times and twice scored six goals in a game this season, the second-most by an MPSF player in 2014.
Antal’s 71 total goals this season are the second-most ever by a Cal freshman and the fourth-most overall.
Young ranks fourth on the Bears with 27 goals this season and earlier in the year moved into the top-10 on Cal’s all-time scoring list. She currently ranks 10th with 133 career goals.
Illes is second on the Bears with 46 goals, which is the third-most in a single-season by a Cal freshman. McKee, who along with Young is a team captain, has scored 18 goals on the season.
Tarrago ranks eighth in the MPSF with an average of 1.95 goals per game. Her 41 goals is third overall on the Bears.
With three players, Cal placed the most student-athletes on the All-Newcomer Team.
The Bears open play in the NCAA Tournament on Friday, May 9 against Arizona State at USC’s Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
