LOS ANGELES – The fourth-seeded Cal women’s water polo team advanced to the semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament with an 8-7 overtime victory over fifth-seeded San Jose State on Friday afternoon at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center at USC.
Senior Ashley Young registered a hat trick for the Bears (18-7), including the eventual game-winner that put Cal up 8-6 with 23 seconds left in the first overtime. The teams played two 3-minute overtime periods after the score was knotted at 6-6 at the end of regulation.
Freshman Dora Antal and Roser Tarrago each scored two goals for the Bears, who will meet top-seeded Stanford on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the semifinals.
The game was close throughout, with neither team establishing more than a one-goal lead until Young’s final tally put the Bears up by two in overtime. Freshman Anna Illes gave Cal a 7-6 lead with 2:21 remaining in the first overtime.
The Spartans (20-12) took a 5-4 lead with 2:18 left in the third quarter, but Antal tied it with a goal with 51 seconds to go in the period. Young put Cal in front 6-5 with a goal at the 5:38 mark of the fourth quarter, but San Jose State tied it with 1:36 to play.
The Spartans cut it to 8-7 on a goal with 57 seconds remaining in the second overtime, but Cal’s defense came up with one final stop to close out the win.
Antal moved into sole possession of second place on Cal’s single-season freshman scoring list with 67 goals. That mark also puts her in sixth place all-time overall. Young moved within four goals of ninth place on Cal’s career scoring list with 132.
