BERKELEY – The No. 4 Cal women’s water polo team erupted for seven goals in the fourth quarter Saturday to pull away from No. 7 Cal State Northridge for a 15-10 victory in the final home game of the 2014 season at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Lone senior Ashley Young was one of three Cal players to register a hat trick, with two coming in the decisive fourth quarter. Freshmen Dora Antal and Anna Illes also tallied three goals for the Bears (17-5).
Cal entered the fourth quarter clinging to an 8-6 lead but Young immediately scored to make it 9-6. Sophomore Brooke Vowell followed with one of her two goals on the day.
The Matadors (19-6), who saw an 11-game win streak come to an end, cut it to 10-7. But the Bears got back-to-back goals by Illes and junior Victoria Williams to lead 12-7 with 4:41 to play.
Cal State Northridge closed to within 13-9 with 2:45 left, but goals by Young and freshman Roser Tarrago gave the Bears some breathing room and they were able to close it out.
Williams also finished with two goals for the Bears. Freshman goalie Madeline Trabucco made eight saves.
Young, accompanied by her mother, Margie, was honored before in a pregame ceremony before playing the final home game of her career.
The Bears will close the regular season with two road games, beginning April 12 at No. 5 Arizona State. Cal finishes the season the following week at No. 3 Stanford before traveling to USC for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships.
