BERKELEY – The No. 4 Cal women’s water polo team got two goals apiece from Dora Antal, Anna Illes and Michelle Caron but the Bears fell to No. 2 UCLA 11-8 on Thursday at the Spieker Aquatics Complex.
The Bears (16-5, 2-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) got off to a 3-1 lead after back-to-back goals by Antal, including one on a penalty shot. But the Bruins (19-2, 2-0) scored the next four goals to establish a 5-3 advantage with 5:27 remaining in the first half. The teams then traded goals to give UCLA a 6-4 halftime advantage.
After Illes scored the first goal of the third period to make it 6-5, the Bruins put together another four-goal string to make it 10-5 early in the fourth period. Cal made a furious run during the second half of the fourth quarter, with a goal by Roser Tarrago and two in a row by Caron to cut the deficit to 10-8 with 2:18 to play.
