BERKELEY – The No. 4 Cal women’s water polo team scored eight unanswered goals during the second and third periods in a 19-10 victory over CSU Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
After the score was tied 4-4 at the end of the first quarter, Cal (16-4, 2-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) proceeded to score the next eight goals to take a 12-4 lead with 6:38 left in the third period. Freshman Dora Antal, returning to the pool after missing three games with an injury, scored all four of her goals during the 8-0 run.
Freshman Roser Tarrago scored both of her goals in the first period as the Bears established a 4-2 first-quarter advantage.
The Roadrunners (12-17, 0-3 MPSF) cut it to 13-8 at the end of the third quarter but Young scored the first goal of the fourth, followed by two more goals by Illes to push the advantage to eight once again.
Freshman Genevieve Weed scored the first two goals of her college career near the end of the fourth period to help polish off the scoring.
Cal will return to Spieker Pool on Thursday against No. 2 UCLA for a 1:30 p.m. game to be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
