The team split four games this past weekend at the UC Irvine Tournament. On Saturday, we played UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine. Madeline Trabucco had the chance to play against her twin sister who is a member of the UCSB team. We then played Irvine in front of their home crowd. It was definitely two fun games.
We played USC and Stanford on Sunday. We had a couple of tough losses but the team is confident that we will come out better and stronger the next time we match up against these two teams. It was definitely a great chance to play these matches before we see them during the conference games.
For those girls who are returners from last year’s team, we had the great surprise of having Dana Ochsner and Taylor Dodson’s parents come out and watch our games. Dana and Taylor were members of the Cal team that graduated last spring. They are currently playing in Spain for a club team. It was amazing to hear that we had their support even when their daughters are no longer on the team and overseas.Once a Bear, always a Bear!
On Friday night before the tournament, we had the opportunity to have our traditional pre-tournament pasta meal at one of the girl’s house. This time, we went over to Pippa Saunders' house. It is always fun to have a delicious home-cooked team dinner and the chance to meet up with our families who have travelled to watch our games. We also got to sing Happy Birthday to Nusi (Anna Illes), who celebrated her 20th Birthday on Friday! Thank you to the Saunders family!
This past week, Ashley Young and I had the opportunity to join Rich at a lunch at the Claremont. It was the Bear Backer Luncheon that honors many of the people who have donated money, time and energy to the Cal athletic community. The donors are treated to lunch, and a few awards are presented to a handful of supporters that have made a large impact in the Cal community this past year. Thank you to not only those who support Cal Women’s Water Polo, but to all of the donors who contribute to Cal Athletics! The Bears would not be one of the best schools in the country without your support!
The team has another break from games this week. However, we will be working hard preparing for our first conference game against San Jose State on Saturday, March 8th. GO BEARS!
