STANFORD, Calif. – Freshman Dora Antal scored 11 goals in two victories Sunday as the No. 4 Cal women’s water polo team took third place at the Stanford Invitational.
Antal tallied six scores in the Bears’ 9-6 victory over No. 16 Michigan to wrap up bracket play. That put Cal in the Third Place Game against No. 5 UC Irvine, and the Bears doubled up the Anteaters, 12-6.
The Bears (9-1) trailed for much of the match against the Wolverines, but came back to tie it at 6-6 heading into the fourth period. Cal then got two fourth-period scores from Antal and another by junior Kelly McKee to pull ahead.
Antal and fellow Hungarian teammate Anna Illes helped the Bears get off to a strong start against the Anteaters, combining for the first five goals of the match to take early command. UC Irvine never cut the deficit to less than three goals the remainder of the way.
Illes scored three goals against the Anteaters and finished with four on the day. Freshman Roser Tarrago added two against UC Irvine. Freshman Emily Loughlin scored a goal in each match.
Freshman goalie Madeline Trabucco combined to make 11 saves in the two matches. Fellow freshman Kelsey Roland made her college debut in the win over the Anteaters, playing four minutes and making two saves.
The Bears are now off until Feb. 15, when they will host a pair of matches at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Cal will welcome No. 12 Long Beach State to Berkeley for a 1 p.m. showdown before hosting Santa Clara at 5 p.m.
