SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Outscoring its opponents 27-10, the No. 4 Cal women's water polo team swept its two matches at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational on Saturday to finish the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record.
The Bears (6-0) began the day with a 13-6 win over Long Beach State and then went on to defeat UC Santa Barbara 14-4.
Freshman Dora Antal led the Bears in scoring yet again, recording eight goals during the two games, which gives her a team-high 25 for the season. Junior Victoria Williams and freshman Anna Illes both scored four goals between the two matches. Sophomore Brooke Vowell scored one against Long Beach St. and two against UCSB, bringing her total for the day to three.
Senior Ashley Young, juniors Kelly McKee, Tiera Schroeder and Michelle Caron, and sophomore Sierra Smiley each scored a goal against Long Beach State. Junior Missy Hale, sophomore Meagan Smith, and freshman Emily Loughlin recorded a goal vs. UCSB.
Freshman goalie Madeline Trabucco made eight saves vs. Long Beach and six against UC Santa Barbara, bringing her total to 14. Junior Savanna Smith saved four against Long Beach and five vs. UCSB, totaling 9 saves for the day.
The Bears will return to action next Saturday-Sunday when they head to the Stanford Invitational. Cal opens the event Saturday against No. 8 San Jose State at noon. The Bears will also face No. 3 UCLA and No. 13 Michigan in the tournament.
