DAVIS – Freshman Dora Antal scored six goals and the No. 4 Cal women’s water polo team scored four in a row early in the fourth quarter en route to a 14-9 victory over No. 18 UC Davis at the UC Davis Invitational on Saturday.
Antal, who played for Hungary’s 2012 Olympic Team and was named last week’s MPSF/KAP 7 Newcomer of the Week after scoring three goals in a season-opening victory over Pacific at the California Speedo Cup, tied for the third-highest single-game goal mark in Cal history. Antal joins five other players who have scored six goals in a game in the Bears’ history.
Cal’s single-game record is eight goals, set by Colette Glinkowski in 1997.
Cal struck first with three consecutive goals early in the first period, as Antal, sophomore Sierra Smiley and freshman Anna Illes each found the back of the net to give the Bears a 3-0 lead at the 4:45 mark of the first quarter. The Aggies (0-1) remained within striking distance and still trailed just 10-6 early in the fourth quarter when goals by junior Victoria Williams, Antal and two by Saunders helped put the match away. UC Davis scored three goals during the final 2:07 of the game to cut into the deficit.
The Bears will return to action next Friday-Saturday at the UC Santa Barbara Tournament. Cal opens the event Friday against Concordia at 2:50 p.m. The Bears also face Azusa Pacific, Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara during the weekend.
