BERKELEY – After opening the 2014 season by hosting the California Speedo Cup, the fourth-ranked Cal women’s water polo team now embarks on an extended road trip that will feature tournaments on three consecutive weekends.  The Bears’ first road assignment is this Saturday at the UC Davis Invitational, where Cal will take on the host UC Davis Aggies, who are ranked No. 18 nationally. The Bears are 30-1 all-time against UC Davis, having last faced the Aggies in 2012.

Bears Tied For No. 4 In Initial CWPA Poll
The Bears are in a tie for the No. 4 spot with fellow MPSF foe Arizona State in the initial CWPA Top 20.  Cal and ASU each earned 81 points, putting the Bears in the same spot in the rankings they began last season. Defending NCAA champion USC is No. 1, followed by No. 2 Stanford and No. 3 UCLA. The top five teams are all from the MPSF.

Antal Names MPSF/KAP 7 Newcomer of the Week
Cal freshman Dora Antal was named the MPSF/KAP 7 Newcomer of the Week after her three-goal performance during a season-opening win over Pacific in the California Speedo Cup. Antal, a member of Hungary’s 2012 Olympic Team, scored two of her goals in the third period when the Bears broke open a close game by outscoring the Tigers 5-0. Antal is the first Cal player to be named Newcomer of the Week since Pippa Saunders earned the honor last season.

Last Time Out
The Bears opened the 2014 season by defeating Pacific 12-4 at the California Speedo Cup on Saturday. Freshman Dora Antal led the Bears with three goals while lone senior Ashley Young added two. Sophomores Molly Quinn and Brooke Vowell and freshmen Anna Illes and Stephanie Mutafyan each scored her first career goal. Freshman goalie Madeline Trabucco made her college debut and registered three saves.

Freshman Class Has Olympic Flavor
Cal’s freshman class includes two student-athletes who participated in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Roser Tarrago won a Silver Medal while playing for her native Spain while Dora Antal helped Hungary advance to the Bronze Medal match.

Bears Represent U.S. At World University Games
The Bears spent 16 days in Kazan, Russia last summer representing the United States at the World University Games. Cal was picked by USA Water Polo to be Team USA’s entry into the event, marking the first time a singluar college team was sent to compete at the competition rather than a squad of all-stars. The team was made up of 13 of Cal’s players, who played six matches and a number of other scrimmages.
