BERKELEY – Cal’s women’s water polo team is in a tie for the No. 4 spot in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Preseason Top 20 that was released Wednesday.
The Bears, who began last season also at No. 4, are deadlocked with Arizona State with 81 points each. Defending NCAA champion USC is ranked No. 1, Stanford is No. 2 and UCLA is No. 3. The top five teams in the preseason poll are from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
Cal, which began the 2014 season Saturday with a 12-4 win over Pacific in the California Speedo Cup at Spieker Aquatics Complex, returns four starters from last year’s team that went 17-7 and finished the season ranked No. 5 in the nation. The Bears also feature a strong freshman class which features 2012 Olympians Roser Tarrago of Spain and Dora Antal of Hungary.
The Bears will play a minimum of 20 matches against teams ranked in the initial CWPA Poll.
