Season has officially started! Thank you to all of our family and friends who came out on Saturday to support the team! It’s always a treat for the team to look up into the stands and see some familiar faces!
The team is back training this week after a day off on Sunday. Since it hasn’t been that long since my last entry, I thought that I would introduce some of our freshmen that made their college debut on Saturday.
First, huge shoutout to Dora Antal who was named MPSF/KAP 7 Newcomer of the Week! Dora is one of two players that joined Cal this year from her home country of Hungary. Along with fellow Hungarian Anna Illes, Dora has been trying to teach the team some Hungarian words. But to be honest, we may not be the best students in this discipline. I, personally, only remember how to say one word and that word is "ball". Well, if I can only remember how to say one word, it is fitting that we use that word so often in water polo!
Freshman Genevieve Weed also played in her first game at Cal on Saturday. Gen has a laser for a shot! We were unable to see it on Saturday but I look forward to seeing it soon! Just a warning, it will happen so quickly that one moment the ball will be in her hand, and in the next instance at the back of the net. So try not to blink when she is in the pool, the Generator (great nickname, right?!) is deadly!
Madeline Trabucco was our starting goalie against the University of Pacific. Mady is always extremely upbeat and positive. I don’t believe that there has been a time when I have spoken to Mady and there wasn’t a huge smile on her face. Fun fact about Mady: She has a twin sister that plays water polo at UC Santa Barbara! Should be exciting when we play against them in a couple of weeks!
I also want to congratulate freshmen Anna Illes and Stephanie Mutafyan, and sophomores Brooke Vowell and Molly Quinn for scoring their first collegiate goals! And congratulations to Kat Menz for her beautiful performance of the National Anthem on Saturday!
Next for your Cal Bears is a road trip to UC Davis on Saturday! GO BEARS!
