PHILADELPHIA - Despite getting four goals from true freshman Bella Huther, the California women's lacrosse team lost to La Salle, 10-6, Monday night in Philadelphia, Pa. The Golden Bears fell to 2-4 on the season.
"It's a tough loss for us," head coach Ginger Miles said. "The effort and the energy were there, but we fell short in execution. La Salle did a great job making our transition game tough, and we struggled to handle the ball in cold conditions. There's certainly things for us to build off of in this loss and we'll look to regroup on Wednesday."
Huther tallied four goals on eight shots, six of which were on goal, and she also registered a ground ball. Amelia Burke and Gaby Christman scored the other two goals for the Bears. Christman also added an assist before getting handed two yellow cards to end her day in the final minute of the first half.
Christman started the scoring with her goal at the 25:44 mark. Cal scored two of the first three goals of the night, as Huther tallied her first score at the 17:54 mark. However, after Huther's goal La Salle went on to score the next five out of six goals to end the first half with a 6-3 lead. Huther ended a 15-minute scoring drought by Cal with her second goal with two minutes left before halftime.
Huther garnered her third goal two and a half minutes into the second half to cut La Salle's lead down to two, but La Salle scored the next three straight goals to take control of the game for good.
With her four goals tonight, Huther extended her team lead in that category to 18. Christman and Paige Gasparino are tied for second with 13 each.
Cal continues its East Coast road trip on Wednesday, March 26, at Lehigh at 1 p.m. PT.
