Mondays With Miles - Ups and Downs of Fall Ball

Release:  10/29/2013

This past weekend featured our final play day of the fall. We had a chance to go up against conference foes St Mary’s, Fresno, Stanford and San Diego State. At times we looked like the team we usually see at practice, which is crafty on attack, communicates well and tough on defense. Other times, I’m not sure what we looked like. We struggled to find our momentum throughout the day, and by the fourth game of the day, it was apparent that we were out of steam.

It’s tough not to walk away with mixed emotions on the weekend. While there were some break downs along the way, there is also much to build on. Our ball handling in transition was much improved. On offense, we were able to create some beautiful scoring opportunities both by dodging and feeding. Defensively, we got some key stops through communication and working together, and our goalies made some big-time saves.

These are all the things we’ve been seeing at practice on a day-to-day basis. As is true with most young teams; however, we struggled with consistency. We made too many mistakes, lost our composure and forgot the fundamentals at times unfortunately.

As we get more practices under our belts and we all become more familiar and comfortable in our sets, I have no doubt that we will be able to put together a complete effort. It’ll take hard work, commitment and a drive for precision from our players to get there, but it’s most certainly within reach - and that’s exciting.

As exciting as our potential is, part of my job is not becoming so focused on what we could be that I forget who we are now. Right now we are a work in progress. Right now we are becoming the team we want to be in the spring and that means making mistakes and learning from them, trying new things outside of our comfort zone, learning new concepts and applying them and attempting to never forget the fundamentals along the way. It won’t be easy but it never is!

The Golden Bears will be taking on our alumni this Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Witter Field as fall ball comes to a close. Happy Halloween and Go Bears!
