BERKELEY – Three members of the California men’s crew program have accepted invitations to participate in the United States Men’s U23 National Team selection camp.
Spencer Hall, Justin Murphy and Richard Walter were one of 27 individuals selected to compete in the camp that will determine who will represent the United States in the eight and straight four at the World Rowing Championships later this summer. Walter was invited to the U23 National Team selection camp last year and Hall was also invited in 2012.
Hosted by the California Rowing Club in Oakland, the U.S. U23 National Team selection camp will train in the Bay Area before moving to Princeton, N.J., where they will train with the U.S. Senior National Team eight and straight four July 12-18.
From there an eight and four crew will be selected to represent the United States at the World Rowing U23 Championships July 23-27 in Varese, Italy.
Murphy, Hall and Walter guided Cal to a second-place team finish at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships earlier this month. Walter served on the second varsity that captured a National Championship, defeating Washington and Brown in the event. Hall rowed on the varsity eight that placed third overall, while Murphy competed in the freshman eight that finished second at the IRAs. Murphy was named the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year following his first year with the Bears this spring.
