REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – Top-ranked California men’s crew swept all three of its races against No. 12 Wisconsin on Friday evening in the opening day of the Stanford Invitational at Redwood Shores.
The Golden Bears’ varsity eight enters the regatta ranked No. 1 nationally in the latest USRowing Collegiate Poll released on Wednesday.
Cal opened the racing with a 22-second victory over the Badgers in the varsity eight, racing down the course in 6:13.0. Wisconsin completed the course in 6:35.4.
In the second varsity eight, Cal defeated Wisconsin by more than 15 seconds, completing the course in 6:12.1, compared to 6:28.0. The time of 6:12.1 was the quickest time of any of the 18 total boats to race on Friday.
In the Bears’ final race of the evening, the freshman eight completed the course in 6:13.4, compared to Wisconsin’s time of 6:20.2.
Racing at the two-day Stanford Invitational continues on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. The Bears’ varsity eight will kick things off against Oregon State in the first race of the day. The second varsity eight against OSU will begin on 9:40 a.m. and the freshman eight race against the Beavers is slated for 10:20 a.m. A second freshman eight will face UC San Diego at 3:10 p.m. to conclude the Bears’ competition for the weekend.
