California Men’s Crew heads to the East coast to compete in a pair of prestigious regattas over the next two weeks. The Golden Bears will field an eight in the Head of the Charles this Sunday, Oct. 20, in Boston and two boats in the Princeton Chase on Oct. 27.
“The focus of our year is the Spring racing season culminating in the IRA National Championships” said California assistant coach Scott Frandsen. “But the Charles and the Chase are great opportunities to get our guys some race experience and to compare our crews against the top collegiate crews in the country. While these races are not the focus of our year, they still provide the opportunity for these crews to set the tone for the year for our entire squad."
Cal’s eight traveling to the Head of the Charles features Colby Rapson (coxswain), Aaron Wright (stroke), Ivan Ostojic (7), Jordan Vanderstoep (6), Louis Snelson (5), Jovan Jovanovic (4), Christian Reynolds (3), James Edwards (2), and Cole Reiser (bow). Line-ups for the Princeton Chase boats will follow next week.
The Bears finished third in last year's Head of the Charles and will be therefore starting in third position behind the University of Washington and Harvard University in Sunday's race. Other top crews of note are national teams from USA, France, and Holland, and university crews from Amsterdam and Melbourne. It will be a great opportunity for the Bears to test themselves against crews from around the world.
The Championship eight race this weekend will begin at 11:54 a.m. (PT) on Sunday. Fans can follow all the action this weekend here.
