Personal: Placed third in the pairs at the 2009 youth nationals ... while at Lakeside High School competed in soccer, cross country and swimming where she was a four-year captain ... participated last summer with the Seattle Area Rowing Association ... parents are Gordon Gardiner and Nina Smith-Gardiner ... father rowed at Harvard and mother rowed at Princeton ... has two sisters ... born in Berkeley, but attended high school in Seattle, Wash. ... undeclared major.

The best part about being on Cal crew is: The competition and camaraderie on the team. We push each other hard during workouts and better ourselves to better the team as a whole.

I chose Cal because: It was a place I could challenge myself both academically and athletically. The team has an amazing reputation of success.

What sets Cal apart: Being surrounded by so many dedicated teammates makes you hold yourself to a higher standard and push yourself beyond what you thought you could do.
