Sydney, Australia -- The Bears took first place in their final race representing Cal in the Sydney International Rowing Regatta portion of the racing as Paparangi Hipango, Inger Kavlie, Jacinta Edmunds and Cara Bohmann raced in the Open Coxless Four event.

After 500 meters, Cal was in third place and over three seconds behind a Western Australia crew. During the body of the race Cal had a strong powerful rhythm and moved into first place just behind the halfway 1000-meter mark. They continued to move and won by a full length.

Cal had two pairs representing the United States in the W2- race at the World Rowing Cup. Both of the USA pairs were in the same heat, and only one crew from the best moved directly to the A final.

The Canadian pair led from start to finish to win the heat. The USA1 pair (Agatha Nowinski and Kara Kohler) started slow but developed a solid rhythm after 500 meters. They moved from fifth to second but could not challenge the Canadians. They move to Saturday's repechage.

Racing for the first time as a combination and at the senior level, the USA2 pair (Kendall Chase and Rosie Popa) started well and matched the speed of the two Australian pairs throughout the 2000 meters. They were fifth at the finish and will race in tomorrow's repechage.
