BERKELEY – The USA Men's Senior National Water Polo Team – featuring Cal senior goalie Jon Sibley, former Golden Bear star John Mann and incoming freshman Nicholas Carniglia – resumed its series with Serbia Saturday in front of a large crowd at Cal’s Spieker Aquatics Complex. For the first time in the series, Serbia suited up their entire roster and came away with an 18-15 victory in a high-scoring battle.
Mann, who scored a goal during the June 4 contest versus Serbia in Stockton and in the June 5 match at Davis, tallied his third goal of the series Saturday at his collegiate home pool. Sibley (three saves) combined with fellow Team USA goalie McQuin Baron to record 10 saves.
For those unable to attend the Serbia-USA series, live streaming is available Live Stream. The final match between the two countries is set for Stanford at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 8.
Sibley, a 6-6 goalie from Lafayette, was a 2012 honorable mention All-American for the Bears and is a two-time ACWPC and MPSF All-Academic selection. He has tallied 247 saves in two seasons for Cal.
One of the top players in school history, the 6-6, 250-pound Mann was a 2012 USA Olympian at the London Games and was the first Bear to capture the Peter J. Cutino Award as the nation’s top collegiate water polo player in 2006. The award was named after the former Cal water polo coaching legend, Peter Cutino. As a senior in ‘06, Mann led the Bears to a 31-4 record and both the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and NCAA titles.
Carniglia is a 6-3, 205-pound two-meter defender from Lodi and competed for Lodi High School where he was an eighth-team High School All-American and a member of the USA National Youth Team that captured the silver medal at the UANA Championships in 2013.
