BERKELEY – The best in international water polo will be coming to Spieker Aquatics Complex Saturday as the USA Men's Senior National Team, represented by Cal senior goalie Jon Sibley, former Golden Bear star John Mann and incoming freshman Nicholas Carniglia, will host the Serbian National Team June 7 at 3 p.m. in Berkeley.
“We are very happy that the U.S. National Team is back in Berkeley for this game,” said Cal coach Kirk Everist, who was a member of the USA National Team for nine years and was a competitor at the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. “It is a great opportunity for people to see some of the world’s best water polo players. It will be great to see John (Mann), Jon (Sibley) and Nic (Carniglia) in action at Spieker."
In addition, Spieker Aquatics Complex will host a USA Water Polo coach/referee school June 6-7 in Berkeley. School registration will include presentations from USA coach Dejan Udovicic, National Referee Director Jim Cullingham, Pacific head coach James Graham and UC Davis head coach Dan Leyson. The series between the Americans and Serbians started June 4 at the University of the Pacific where Mann scored a goal in 13-6 Serbia victory. The two teams square off at 7 p.m. tonight at UC Davis. After a day off, the series resumes on June 7 at Cal. The final match is set for Stanford with a 3 p.m. start June 8.
Sibley, a 6-6 goalie from Lafayette, was a 2012 honorable mention All-American for the Bears and is a two-time ACWPC and MPSF All-Academic selection. He has tallied 247 saves in two seasons for Cal.
One of the top players in school history, the 6-6, 250-pound Mann was a 2012 USA Olympian at the London Games and was the first Bear to capture the Peter J. Cutino Award as the nation’s top collegiate water polo player in 2006. The award was named after the former Cal water polo coaching legend, Peter Cutino. As a senior in ‘06, Mann led the Bears to a 31-4 record and both the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and NCAA titles.
Carniglia is a 6-3, 205-pound two-meter defender from Lodi and competed for Lodi High School where he was an eighth-team High School All-American and a member of the USA National Youth Team that captured the silver medal at the UANA Championships in 2013.
