BERKELEY – Senior Hunter Gettelfinger was tabbed team MVP as the 2013 California’s men’s water polo team celebrated its 2013 campaign with its season-ending banquet last Saturday (Dec. 14) at the University Club in Memorial Stadium. The Golden Bears, the nation’s most successful program with 13 NCAA titles, also honored their seven graduating seniors – Gettelfinger, Michael Boggan, Giacomo Cupido, Ayal Keren, Miquel Martin de Bustamante, Scott Siegel and Collin Smith.
Gettelfinger, from San Diego, finished the 2013 campaign with a team-high 35 assists and 29 ejections earned, while also scoring 27 goals in 25 matches with 27 steals and 11 field blocks. He scored five goals during the MPSF Tournament and was among the team leaders with five ejections earned, four assists, four steals and four field blocks. Gettelfinger ended his Cal career with 64 goals and was a 2012 honorable mention All-American, as well as three-time ACWPC and MPSF All-Academic honoree.
Other award winners for the 2013 squad, which finished 18-8 and captured its final two matches of the 2013 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament, were Martin de Bustamante as the recipient of the Cutino Award, junior Graham Nesbit as the team’s Scholar-Athlete (3.79 GPA), sophomore Colin Mulcahy as the Aquatic Strength Award winner and freshman Phil Cozens, Jr. as the recipient of the Golden Bear Award.
Earlier (Dec. 3), Kirk Everist’s squad had four players – Gettelfinger, Smith, junior Aleksa Saponjic and Mulcahy – named to the 2013 MPSF All-Conference team. Gettelfinger and Smith were tabbed second-team honorees, while Saponjic and sophomore Mulcahy were honorable mention selections.
