BERKELEY – Over 850 student-athletes - along with coaches, administrators and athletic department staff - gathered at Evans Diamond on Wednesday for the annual Big C Welcome Barbecue.

The event is intended for student-athletes from different sports to come together as a unified department before the school year begins. After the barbeque, student-athletes from all different sports were divided into groups, led by an athletic staff member, and worked together to complete an Amazing Race scavenger hunt around Haas Pavilion.

Student-athletes were also each awarded a “Bear Day” T-Shirt, which lists one game or event for each sport that athletes from other teams are encouraged to attend.

At the end of the event, interim athletic director H. Michael Williams completed the #ALSIceBucketChallenge with the assistance of the California men’s basketball team. Williams then passed the challenge to all 850 of Cal’s student-athletes.

“It has been an amazing experience being here with all the student-athletes,” junior field hockey player Natalie Gibbens said. “You get to meet some other student-athletes - not just your teammates - so it has been a really cool event."
