BERKELEY - Cal freshman Missy Franklin has been named the National Freshman Swimmer of the Week by collegeswimming.com following her impressive performance at AT&T Winter Nationals Dec. 5-7.

Franklin, who was the individual high-point scorer at the meet, captured the 200-yard freestyle in a school- and meet-record 1:41.40 while also winning the 100 backstroke in 51.59. In addition, she was second in the 500 free (school-record 4:34.63) and 200 back (to teammate Elizabeth Pelton) and third in the 100 free. Franklin also played a key role on three victorious relays: the 400 and 800 free relay and the 400 medley relay.

So far this season, Franklin has posted NCAA A qualifying standards in five events – 100, 200 and 500 free and 100 and 200 back – and she owns Cal’s fastest times in every freestyle event from the 50 through the 1000.

The Bears return to action in January and have two remaining home meets, hosting, hosting Arizona State and Arizona Jan. 24-25.
