No. 4 Cal MWP Tops Long Beach State, 15-10

BERKELEY – Powered by six goals from junior standout Aleksa Saponjic, No. 4-ranked Cal advanced to the semifinals of the NorCal Invitational with a 15-10 victory over Long Beach State Saturday (Sept. 21) at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Long Beach State is coached by former Cal All-American and Olympian Gavin Arroyo.

The Golden Bears (6-0) will next face UCLA in the semifinals of the NorCal Invite at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday at Spieker. The other semifinal match will be defending national champion USC versus Stanford at 10:50 a.m.

Besides Saponjic’s match-high six goals against the 49ers, Cal got two goals apiece from senior Giacomo Cupido and sophomore Colin Mulcahy. Junior goalie Jon Sibley tallied 14 saves. The Bears had jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first period with Saponjic, who won a 2012 Olympic bronze in London with his native Serbia, scoring two of his six goals in the opening eight minutes.

Cal dominated its opening match of the tournament, defeating Air Force, 17-8. The Bears were led in that match by sophomore Mitchell Hamilton’s three goals. Other top scorers for the Bears against the Falcons were senior Collin Smith, junior Graham Nesbit, junior Chris Daniel, freshman Farrell South and freshman Chandler Jarrels-Stickney with two goals apiece. Cal had 10 different players score and senior goalie Michael Boggan finished with five saves. Nesbit paced the Bears with three steals.

Kirk Everist’s squad had jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first period and owned a 9-2 advantage at the half.
