Eckles Challenge nets more than $424,000 in gifts
After a month-long push to increase the percentage of Cal alumni and fans who give in support of the more than 850 Golden Bear student-athletes, more than 1,100 donors responded to The Eckles Challenge contributing in excess of $424,000 toward Cal Athletics.
The Eckles grant was a $500,000 one-time gift to Cal Athletics directing support to its areas of most need. The Eckles Challenge strives to exponentially increase the percentage of Cal alumni and fans who give in support of the more than 850 Golden Bear student-athletes.
Along with unrestricted giving to the Cal Athletics fund, 14 athletic programs were selected to participate in The Eckles Challenge. During the month of June, donors and fans were encouraged to make a new gift, renew a gift, or encourage other fans and alumni to take the challenge and support these Cal athletic teams:
|Men’s Golf||omen’s Golf|
|Men’s Gymnastics||Women’s Gymnastics|
|Men’s Soccer||Women’s Soccer|
|Track & Field||Volleyball|
Cal Volleyball alumna Theresa Carey was one of the first to take The Challenge.
“As one of the first players to participate in intercollegiate volleyball at Cal, I'm so proud of the program and how far it's come since 1975,” Carey said. “I'm happy to continue supporting Cal Volleyball and look forward to seeing the team return to the Final Four in the near future.”
The close of June represented the end of the giving year for Cal Athletics and Bear Backers. Donations are already being accepted for the new giving year that began on July 1 and finishes on June 30, 2014.
