Golden Bears Shine at U-23 World Championships

LINZ, Austria – Several members of the California men’s crew program excelled at the U-23 World Rowing Championships July 24-28 in Linz, Austria.

Representing the United States, senior Carter Crowe served on the USA 8+ that captured the silver with a time of 5:31.79, three seconds back of gold medalist New Zealand (5:28.63). Fellow Golden Bear James Edwards helped lead Great Britain to a fifth-place finish in the event with a time of 5:35.28.  

The Golden Bear duo of Louis Snelson and Aaron Wright helped guide the Australian 4- to a silver medal with a time of 6:01.18. Romania took home the gold with a time of 5:58.72.

Cal’s Luka Djordevic and Igor Lucic led Azerbaijan to a fourth-place finish in the 2- in the A final on Sunday with a time of 6:46.35, while Cal newcomer Nathan Smith rowed in the United States boat that placed 17th in the event.  

Representing Great Britain, Edward Williams placed seventh in the 4+ in Sunday’s final.

Junior Michael Bernerius was part of the Australian 4+ that placed fourth with a time of 6:25.03.

The U-23 World Championships continued a busy summer for current and former Cal rowers. Earlier this summer, four former Golden Bears competed at the World Rowing Cup #3 at the Rotsee in Lucerne, Switzerland. Zach Vlahos, Nareg Guregian and Will Dean and Spencer Crowley, each represented the Golden Bears in the world championships. Vlahos and Guregian served in the United States eight that captured the gold medal and Dean and Crowley were members of Canada’s four that placed third in the B final.
