BERKELEY – The WNBA Playoffs begin this week, and the California Golden Bear duo of Gennifer Brandon and Layshia Clarendon will both vie for their first professional titles with their respective teams.
Clarendon’s Indiana Fever finished second in the Eastern Conference with a 16-18 record and will face the Washington Mystics (16-18) in the semifinal round beginning Thursday on ESPN2. Clarendon played in 28 games and made two starts, averaging 13.4 minutes per game during the regular season. She averaged 4.2 points per game while shooting .410 from the field and .316 from the three-point line. Clarendon’s best outing this season was arguably against the Connecticut Sun when she scored a career-high 12 points to go with two rebounds and three assists.
Brandon’s Chicago Sky finished fourth in the Eastern Conference with a 15-19 record and will face the conference champion Atlanta Dream (19-15) in the semifinal round beginning Friday on NBATV. Brandon played in 15 games and made two starts, averaging 6.2 minutes per game during the regular season. Playing behind WNBA All-Star and 2013 Rookie of the Year Elena Delle-Donne, Brandon put up solid numbers in Delle-Donne’s two-game absence in June, highlighted by her 3-point, 6-rebound, 2-block effort at Washington.
Qualifying teams in the Western Conference were the Phoenix Mercury, Minnesota Lynx, San Antonio Stars and Los Angeles Sparks.
