GAME #32 California (22-9) vs Baylor (30-4) Ferrell Center • Waco, Texas Monday, March 24 • 6 p.m. PT Series Record: Baylor leads, 3-1 TV: ESPN2 (Pam Ward pxp, Carolyn Peck analyst)
BERKELEY – California advanced to the NCAA Second Round for the third consecutive season and faces host-team Baylor Monday night at 6 p.m. (PT) at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas. The game will be televised live on ESPN2 with Pam Ward and Carolyn Peck on the call.
Monday’s matchup between the Cal Bears (22-9) and Baylor Lady Bears (30-4) will feature a premier point guard matchup between two of the five finalists for the Nancy Lieberman Award in Cal’s Brittany Boyd and Baylor’s Odyssey Sims.
California won a 64-63 thriller over Fordham in the opening round after Boyd hit a runner with 14.6 seconds remaining and Reshanda Gray used flawless perimeter defense on Fordham’s Erin Rooney to prevent the Rams from getting a good final shot off. The win was the 79th in Lindsay Gottlieb’s three-year tenure at Cal - setting a new California mark for wins over a three-year span by surpassing Joanne Boyle’s 78 wins from 2007-10.
Baylor, an 87-74 winner over Western Kentucky in the opening round, holds a 3-1 series advantage over the Golden Bears. The Bears won the lone postseason matchup between the two teams - an 82-72 WNIT win in Amarillo, Texas on March 26, 1981. Baylor has won the last three meetings between the teams, including a 69-56 decision in Waco in the 2007-08 season.
A CALIFORNIA WIN IN MONDAY’S SECOND ROUND WOULD: * Advance the Bears to their second consecutive and third overall Sweet 16 appearance (2008-09, 2012-13) * Improve California to 2-3 in the series against Baylor and end a three-game losing streak to the Lady Bears * Give Lindsay Gottlieb her first win on an opposing team’s floor in postseason competition. Gottlieb, who is 6-2 in NCAA Tournament games, is 6-1 in neutral site games and 0-1 in road games (2011-12 at Notre Dame in the NCAA Second Round). * Be the first win over an AP Top 5 team since California defeated then-No. 5 Stanford 67-55 in Palo Alto on January 13, 2013.
