BERKELEY – California earned its third consecutive at-large bid to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament and was awarded a No. 7 seed in the Notre Dame Regional where the Bears will face No. 10 seed Fordham (25-7, 11-5 Atlantic 10) for a first-round game on Saturday, March 22 in Waco, Texas. Tip-off is scheduled for 1pm (PT) on ESPN2 at the Ferrell Center.

No. 2 seed Baylor and No. 15 seed Western Kentucky will square off in the other first round matchup with the winners of the two games meeting on Monday, March 24 at 6 p.m. (PT).

California (21-9) earned its 10th overall NCAA appearance after finishing in the top two of the Pac-12 for a record third consecutive season. The Bears won seven of their last eight regular season games and were the only team in the country to play four regular season games against RPI Top 4 teams this season.

“(As the brackets were announced) we knew we were going to be in that last bracket and going to Waco,” California head coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. “It’s always exciting to see your name pop up. I’m excited for our players and the opportunity. I thought we’d be a six or seven. Either way you’re going to have a tough first-round game and an opportunity to probably have to beat someone on their home floor. Whoever it is it doesn’t matter. It’s an exciting opportunity.”

Gottlieb led the Bears to the NCAA Final Four last season in what was the best finish in program history. The Bears knocked off Fresno State, South Florida, LSU and Georgia before falling to Louisville in the national semifinals. Cal is 9-9 all-time in NCAA Tournament games.

The Bears played six NCAA Tournament teams this year and were one of five Pac-12 programs selected to the tourney.
