BERKELEY – California women’s basketball senior Mikayla Lyles has been selected as the 2014 recipient of the Robin Roberts/WBCA Broadcasting Scholarship, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced Wednesday.

The $4,500 Robin Roberts/WBCA Broadcasting Scholarship Award is presented annually to one female collegiate basketball player who intends to pursue graduate work and a career in sports communications or journalism.

“I am so proud of Mikayla for earning this prestigious award, and for being recognized on a national level for the qualities that we've seen her display day in and day out over the course of her time as a student-athlete at Cal,” California head coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. “Mikayla is bright, ambitious, hard-working, selfless and passionate. She has used her platform at Cal to impact her teammates, our campus and the community in a positive way. Robin Roberts is the epitome of strength and courage, and to receive a scholarship in her name will continue to motivate Mikayla to make the most of her abilities and opportunities. We are thrilled and honored that Mikayla is this year's recipient.”

Lyles, a 2013 Pac-12 All-Academic team selection, helped guide the California women’s basketball team to the program’s first Pac-12 title in 2013 and a berth in the 2013 NCAA Women’s Final Four.

Off the court, Lyles has served as an ESPNW blogger, worked as a reporter for Comcast Sports Net, taught a class at Cal entitled “Story of the Student-Athlete”, collaborated on the multimedia website ThisIsCalBasketball.com and participated in awareness and inclusion projects such as “Br{ache The Silence” and her own “We A.R.E. Pride” event.

“Mikayla is deserving of the Robin Roberts/WBCA Broadcasting Scholarship,” said WBCA CEO Beth Bass.  “Congratulations to Mikayla on receiving this scholarship. We can never have too many knowledgeable individuals speaking about the game of women’s basketball. I wish Mikayla the best of luck in pursuing a career in sports communication or journalism. We look forward to watching you shine professionally.”

Lyles will formally be recognized during the WBCA Awards Show, which will be held at 5:30 p.m. CT on Monday, April 7, in the Omni Nashville Hotel’s Broadway Ballroom. The event is part of the WBCA National Convention and is held in conjunction with the NCAA Women’s Final Four in Nashville.
