No. 20 California Heads To Reno For Nugget Classic

Bears open Thanksgiving weekend with Wake Forest on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

BERKELEY – No. 20/20 California travels to Reno, Nevada, this Thanksgiving weekend to compete in the annual John Ascuaga’s Nugget Classic hosted by the Nevada Wolf Pack. The Golden Bears take on Wake Forest in Friday night action with Idaho and Nevada competing in the other game. The championship and consolation games are slated for Sunday afternoon at the Lawlor Events Center.

The Golden Bears and Demon Deacons tip-off at 7:30 p.m. (PT) Friday night following the 5 p.m. game between Idaho and Nevada.

Saturday’s games will begin with Nevada’s contest scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m., and the other game scheduled to tip at  8 p.m.

California returns to Haas Pavilion on Saturday, December 7 when the Pacific Tigers visit for a 2 p.m. game.

* Improve Lindsay Gottlieb to 10-4 in neutral site games as California’s head coach

A LOOK AT WAKE FOREST (4-2): Wake Forest enters the Nugget Classic on a three-game winning streak with wins against Davidson, Radford and, most recently, Arizona (70-58). The Demon Deacons are led in scoring by Chelsea Douglas’s 23.0 points per game. Dearica Hamby averages a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Kelila Atkinson also contributes 11.0 points per game. Golden Bear fans may remember head coach Jen Hoover from her three-year stint as an assistant coach under Joanne Boyle from 2008-11 in Berkeley.

CALIFORNIA-WAKE FOREST SERIES: Wake Forest has a 2-0 series advantage with wins at both teams’ home courts. The Demon Deacons took a 61-58 victory in Berkeley in the ‘96-97 season anda  57-48 win in Winston Salem in the ‘99-00 season.

A LOOK AT IDAHO (3-2): Nevada enters the annual Nugget Classic with a 3-2 record after ending a two-game slide with a 79-62 win over Cal State East Bay. Balanced scoring leads the Wolf Pack with five players averaging 8.5 or more points, led by Mimi Mungedi’s 13.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.

GIVE IT TO GRAY: Junior forward Reshanda Gray currently leads the Pac-12 in field goal percentage at .694 through five games and ranks sixth nationally. Gray is currently 34-of-49 shooting after going 25-of-35 (.714) from the field in the last three games against George Washington, Georgetown and Northwestern.  Gray’s production will be a note to watch throughout the season with the California single-season record currently set at .624 (78-of-125) by Sophie von Saldern in the 1992-93 season.
