California Head Coach Mike Montgomery

On the game

“There were a lot of bright spots. We had some really good individual performances…I thought we lost our attention span defensively a lit bit…there was probably a point in time where we didn’t feel threatened so we didn’t play quite as hard defensively. They turned out to be a pretty scrappy team, a little better rebounding than I thought they might be, given their size. We didn’t dominate on the boards like I thought we might. I think we need to establish our inside game a little more. The foul shots are concerning. I thought we had five or six guys play pretty well. We’re going to have to be patient…we’re trying to work five freshmen into the lineup. They’re going to make mistakes, they’re going to learn. You saw Jabari [Bird], the things he’s capable of doing athletically… Jordan Mathews does not have a conscious, he shot the ball, first one got blocked, next time he caught the ball he shot it in…that’s just what Jordan does. I would’ve liked to get Sam [Singer] a little more time. My intention was when I had freshmen in, was to not have more than two at a time in.”

“Probably the most pleasing thing was a 23-to-7 assist to turnover ratio. That means we’re sharing the ball. Generally speaking: one, seven turnovers is not a lot…two, that ratio’s pretty good.”

On whether the team likes to play in transition

“Oh there’s no question. I just don’t think we’ve rebounded the ball as cleanly as we might have expected, given the fact that they were a little undersized. They had good hands; they had kids that were pretty quick off their feet and pretty long so we weren’t able to get as much break-stuff as we might have if we were able to rebound the ball a little cleaner. We’re good in transition. I think guys move the ball pretty well and obviously if you get rewarded for running you’re going to continue to run.”

Coppin State Head Coach Ron Mitchell

On the game:

“I think it was a situation where our kids gave up too many easy baskets and when you play, especially against a team like Cal, you can’t just give up layup after layup after layup because you’re not getting back. That was a problem with us today but I have to give Cal credit. They played well, they shot the threes, made us extend a lot more, and then they started taking it in. They did a tremendous job.”

On takeaways for next game:

“We’re going to have to rebound better and we’re going to have to learn how to get back.  Otherwise, we’re going to have a long, long year.”
