BROOKLYN – Former California men’s basketball All-American Allen Crabbe was selected with the 31st overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft Thursday evening at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Crabbe was the first pick of the second round by the Cleveland Cavaliers and was later acquired by the Portland Trail Blazers in a trade.

"I am glad I have finally landed in the NBA and I feel good to be with the Trail Blazers," Crabbe said. "It is a young team with a lot of talent and I am very glad to be a part of this organization. I am blessed to be in this situation. I am ready to focus on basketball."

“We are very proud of Allen,” said California head men’s basketball coach Mike Montgomery. “This is a special night for both Allen and the entire Cal basketball program. The Portland Trail Blazers are getting a great player and even better person. Allen will represent the Bears well in the NBA.”

He is the 40th Golden Bear to be drafted in school history and the first since Ryan Anderson (New Jersey Nets) was selected in the first round and DeVon Hardin (Seattle Supersonics) was picked in the second round of the 2008 draft.

Crabbe painted his name throughout the school’s record book while leading California to one of the winningest stretches in more than 50 years. Cal placed in the top four in the Pac-12 Conference and reached the postseason in each of Crabbe’s three seasons, totaling 63 wins overall. The Bears advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2012 and 2013 and defeated UNLV this past season.

Crabbe, the 2013 Pac-12 Player of the Year by the league’s coaches, completed his career 10th in school history in scoring with 1,537 points in 98 career games. His 15.7 career scoring average ranks 12th all-time at Cal. Crabbe is also among the school’s all-time leaders in career three-point field goals (third, 209), career free-throw percentage (seventh, .819) and career three-point field goal percentage (T-10th, .382). He was second on the Pac-12’s active career three-point field goals list through this past year.

Crabbe was named a National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and Sporting News third-team All-American, earning first-team All-Pac-12 as well as NABC and U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-District laurels this past season. The junior was selected as a candidate for the Naismith National Player of the Year award in February.

A three-time All-Pac-12 selection, Crabbe was a first-team all-league pick each of his last two seasons. He was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in 2011.

Crabbe, the conference’s regular-season scoring champion this past season, posted 607 points, good for seventh-most in a season in school history. He completed the year ranked third in the Pac-12 in scoring average at 18.4 points per game. Crabbe scored 20 or more points in 28 career games, including 15 times this past season. He led the Bears or tied for the team lead in scoring in 17 contests during the 2012-13 campaign. The junior ranked among the league leaders in three-point field goal percentage (fifth, 1.9), free-throw percentage (eighth, .813), defensive rebounds (10th, 5.1) and overall rebounds (18th, 6.1). His 64 three-point field goals tied for fifth on Cal’s single-season list. Crabbe led Cal in scoring overall each of his last two seasons.

Crabbe is the third former Gold Bear currently in the NBA, joining Anderson (New Orleans Pelicans) and Kidd (head coach of the Brooklyn Nets).
