TEMPE, ARIZ. – Cal baseball came back from a 2-0 deficit late in the game on senior designated hitter Devon Rodriguez’s clutch two-run single, and then scored two unearned runs in the top of the 10th inning to pull out a 5-3 extra-inning victory over Arizona State Sunday afternoon (April 13) at Packard Stadium in Tempe. The Golden Bears, who had lost a heartbreaking 3-2 game in 10 innings Friday night to the Sun Devils and fell 4-1 to ASU Saturday night, improved to 15-17 overall and 4-8 in the Pac-12. ASU dips to 19-14 and 9-6 in conference play.

In the top of the 10th inning, the Bears scored two unearned runs when sophomore first baseman Nick Halamandaris plated junior right fielder Derek Campbell on a fielding error by Sun Devil second baseman Drew Stankiewicz and sophomore left fielder Brian Celsi scored Brenden Farney on a sacrifice bunt that was mishandled by ASU first baseman David Graybill.

Cal was down 2-0 after giving up a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Bears came back with two runs in the top of the eighth inning on Rodriguez’s two-run single to center field, scoring Campbell and sophomore shortstop Max Dutto, who had walked. Freshman third baseman Lucas Erceg then gave Cal a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Celsi, who had led off the inning with a double.

But ASU scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning on Daulton Dinatale’s two-out RBI single off of senior right-hander Trevor Hildenberger (2-2, 2.1 innings, two hits, one run, no walks, one strikeout) to send the game into extra-innings.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, freshman right-hander Andrew Buckley was able to earn his first collegiate save, giving up one hit and keeping the Sun Devils scoreless.

The Bears will finally return home to Evans Diamond after playing the last two weekends on the road at Washington State and Arizona State. Cal hosts Pac-12 leading Washington in a three-game series, April 17-19. Game times are 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
